How this estimate is calculated
How Is Nifty Implied Open Calculated?
Estimated Nifty level = Gift Nifty ÷ e^((r − d) × t)
r is an annual financing-rate proxy, d is the published trailing dividend yield used as a proxy for future dividends, and t is the time from the quote to that contract's expiry in years.

The price and expiry come from the same NSE IX contract. The RBI policy repo rate and Nifty's published trailing dividend yield are model assumptions, not an exact funding rate or a forecast of future dividends. The model uses a 3:30 PM IST expiry-day cutoff. USD settlement and market basis can cause differences from the actual Nifty opening.

HOW GIFT NIFTY FUTURES PREMIUM WORKS
WHAT IS THE FUTURES PREMIUM
- A futures contract usually trades at a different price than its underlying spot — that difference is the futures premium (or discount when negative)
- For Gift Nifty, the premium reflects the cost of carrying Nifty 50 exposure forward to expiry
- Main drivers: risk-free interest rate minus dividend yield of the underlying basket
THEORETICAL FUTURES PRICING FORMULA
- S = Nifty 50 spot
- r = risk-free rate
- d = expected annual Nifty 50 dividend yield, not a fixed constant
- t = time to expiry in years
- Gift Nifty's USD denomination adds a small USD/INR carry component on top
A SEPARATE OVERNIGHT MOVEMENT CHECK
- The automatic estimate card above reverses the theoretical formula using the exchange's quoted contract and expiry, the published RBI repo rate as a financing proxy, and Nifty's published trailing dividend yield as a dividend proxy. The Near-Term Outlook repeats that same result; it does not calculate a separate opening estimate.
- The following overnight-movement check is a different method, shown here for explanation. It is not the calculation used by the estimate card or the Near-Term Outlook line.
- Estimated opening gap = Gift Nifty now − Gift Nifty at the previous Nifty close
- Estimated Nifty open = previous Nifty 50 close + estimated opening gap
- This check uses a Gift Nifty reference captured around 3:30 PM IST on the previous NSE trading day. It removes the futures premium already present at that close, rather than estimating that premium from rates.
- This is an indication before the 9:15 AM bell, not a guaranteed opening price. If the matching reference is missing, the opening estimate is unavailable.
WORKED EXAMPLE (ILLUSTRATIVE)
- Previous Nifty 50 close: 23,700
- Gift Nifty at that close: 23,760; Gift Nifty now: 23,790
- Estimated gap: 23,790 − 23,760 = +30 points
- Estimated Nifty open: 23,700 + 30 = 23,730 — not the raw Gift Nifty level of 23,790
